Professor Tom DeBlass has spoken to Jiu Jitsu Times in the past on the topic of loyalty. Check out his previous thoughts on the topic here in his article on loyalty. In this exclusive video, Professor DeBlass and his first black belt Garry Tonon share their thoughts on the nature of loyalty between an instructor and student.
Professor DeBlass’ key points:
Loyalty is a two way street. Support your students during their wins and their losses.
Want the best for your students. If that means allowing them to cross train to expand their knowledge, support them.
Be engaged with your students everyday if possible. Because you didn’t train with them that day, doesn’t mean you can’t have impact in their life.
Don’t expect loyalty if you aren’t willing to give. Be there for them and they will be there for you.
Professor Tonon’s key points:
Action speaks louder than words. Don’t just say you are loyal. Be loyal.
Loyalty goes beyond the mats. Everyone has life challenges. If you can be there for your students or instructors long after the Academy is closed, the impact will be priceless.
