Tom Deblass Adds NYPD Jiu-Jitsu As Official Affiliate – Now Offering Classes Free Of Charge

After a recent seminar with the NYPD, Tom DeBlass Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has officially affiliated with the NYPD BJJ Club, meaning all of NY’s finest can now train at DeBlass’ academy free of charge. Additionally, a Tom Deblass black belt will provide a free seminar at the NYPD Police Academy roughly every two months.

The news comes as agencies around the world are adopting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for their officers, leading to less gun use while on duty and better protection for both, suspects and arresting officers.

Deblass made the announcement with a social media post,

“I’d like to officially announce the NYPD Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club is now OFFICIALLY AFFILIATED with Tom DeBlass Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!!! My seminar got amazing feedback and after speaking more with the NYPD BJJ President Detective Frank, we decided this would be an amazing opportunity for everyone!

What does this mean? It means anyone that is part of the NYPD regardless what team they train on, if any team at all, can drop in my Academy and train with absolutely no mat fee anytime they want wih me personally. It also means that every two months or so a Tom DeBlass Black Belt will teach a free seminar at the NYPD Police Academy. This also means I will continue to diligently work on effective ways within the guidelines of the NYPD for officesrs to effectively defend themselves while keeping everyone as safe as possible throuhg Jiu-Jitsu.

This is truly HISTORY being made. We are changing the game!!!!!

Detective Frank and officers of the NYPD, I am looking forward to a life long friendship and partnership with you.”

NYPD has notoriously had some of the most strict guidelines for their officers in regards to detaining a resisting suspect. Perhaps most widely-known is their “no choke” rule, which doesn’t allow officers to grab the neck of any suspect- which was adopted after the infamous George Floyd incident to prevent officers from causing death or serious injury through improper restraint.

DeBlass continued his gratitude for the opportunity and achievement in the caption of his post,

“I cannot say enough great things about the group of officers I worked with two nights ago and Detective Frank. It’s not easy to be a cop now a days, especially in NYC when there are so many rules and retrictions. I am going to do my absolute best to help keep them as prepared as possible when it comes to close quarters encounters. I have no doubts that between this, Professor, Gustao, and the great work Detective Frank does (truly an amazing man) things will continue to improve.”
