If you have been training Jiu Jitsu for more than a few months then you have experienced how incredible this art is. Jiu Jitsu can teach you a lot , and not just moves on the mat. Many people have testified to the way BJJ has changed their outlook on life and how they look at things through the Jiu Jitsu lens now. I want to talk about a few of the key life lessons we end up learning through Jiu Jitsu.
- You’re Not As Bad *** As You Thought– We all have experienced this in some way. Everyone (especially men) believes they have some kind of inherent strength and skill in fighting. We quickly learn however, that we are much more vulnerable than we had believed. This humbleness carries out into other aspects of our life and we become much better at learning from others and excepting other views.
- You’re Not Made Of Glass Either– This is the yang to the yin of point 1. While we do humble up, we also learn that we may be stronger than our insecurities. We may have been timid entering, but we grow strong and learn that the body can handle quite a bit. This translates to more confidence in ourselves at work and in our social lives. We may feel less afraid of disappointment and rejection because we learn that we are truly stronger than we thought.
- No One Is Right Or Wrong– In Jiu Jitsu we learn many ways to accomplish very similar things. There are always several viewpoints on the same topic and moves. This ends up serving us in the way we see other people’s ideas. We begin to be more open to new ideas and ways of doing things.
These are the three primary lessons I and the people I have seen have learned through Jiu Jitsu. What other life lessons has BJJ taught you in your training? Do any of these apply to you personally?
