Guard passing is no easy business! There are many different elements that you have to take into consideration when approaching the training partner that’s laying on the ground, wanting to pass them and getting into a dominant position… And one of those elements is minimizing the chance of their guard recovery!
BJJ practitioner Dan Hubler has developed a very efficient way of passing guard by simply spinning around the opponent’s open guard. It works best when the opponent is being lazy with their grips.
Hubler breaks the guard down:
“I can only do this rotating counter clockwise so I like to shelf the opponents left leg on my right side when they are in open guard. My right leg needs to cross over with enough force to put them on their right hip, which limits (but doesn’t absolutely prevent) their ability to take my back during transition.”
He added:
“I only attempt this when I can feel the person slowing down.”

You can also do this in the Gi against the Spider guard, and it works wonders breaking the grips. In this version, you have to spin inside instead of outside like Dan does it but the principle is the same:
