We talk a lot about the Jiu Jitsu journey and the lifestyle that goes along with it. The time and effort needed to progress in your skills and sacrifice that is inevitable. Let’s talk a little about how to handle yourself and your training when “life” happens. Just face it, no matter how much you train and how much you devote yourself, there will always be something that will slow your progress, sometimes completely to a halt.
Most people who practice Jiu Jitsu have a family waiting for them at home. There are certain hardships that will happen at home that are unavoidable. Maybe you are behind on rent, electricity, or, even worse, a death. This is life, how people deal with this differs from one person to the next. I’ve read a bunch of articles on the “blue belt blues”, about those that quit when things get tough. I believe this goes for everyone! I also believe that if its left up to that one person, then they will probably quit.
We as fellow jiujitiero’s also have a responsibility to hold a heartfelt hand to those we train with. Some times we are the only “family” they have. If you notice that your buddy isn’t acting quite right, just ask them if something is wrong. Just this small bit of non-stressful attention may be all they need! To add to that, there are times when people will miss training. Sure sometimes it’s just people being lazy, other times it might be serious. We have to accept life, the good and the bad! Be that friend, reach out, you never know how much it will help!
Remember Jiu Jitsu is our lifestyle, not just a past time! The ones we train with are our family. Jiu Jitsu began as a family practice with the Gracie family, it’s just gotten bigger! We devote blood, sweat, and tears to this passion we call Jiu Jitsu! Life is not easy when you go at it alone, you have your coaches and your teammates to help you when you are down. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, chances are someone else has been through something similar.
With many martial arts, a certain spiritual connection is created. Whether it is with a higher power or with your own inner peace. Jiu Jitsu is no different! A connection is made between our mind and bodies. Life can disrupt this bond and lead to injury or quitting. “Jiu Jitsu changed my life!” This can just be a line or a saving grace. Roll safe and as a family!! Oss!!!
