In the finals of the South American qualifiers for ADCC 2007 then-purple belt Rafael Mendes lost to Bruno Frazatto by a back mount. Orienting Mendes from the sidelines was Léo Vieira, the leader of team CheckMat.
Two years later, the climax. Rafael and Leo faced off at ADCC 2009, in Barcelona, Spain; the Ramon Lemos student finally having qualified, at the Rio tryouts.
