The past few weeks have been highly productive for Gracie Barra protege Felipe Pena. On April 22, 2017, the Abu Dhabi Jiu Jitsu Professional World Championships concluded at the IPIC Arena in the United Arab Emirates. Both bronze medal matches and the men’s black belt finals were featured on the last day of competition.
In the 94kg weight class, Pena did not give the tough Adam Wardzinski any room for maneuver. The Brazilian negotiated his way to Wardzinski’s back, and completed the bout with a choke hold to add another title to his stash from previous years at the Abu Dhabi Championships. See Full Results Here
On April 30, 2017, Pena managed to claim his second Marianas Open championship title. Pena faced another IBJJF title holder, Isaque Bahiense, in the Guam 2017 Marianas tournament. When the bout started, Pena was taken down via a double leg. Nonetheless, Bahiense quickly found out that he had played into Pena’s hands. Pena grabbed hold of his opponent, and formed a brabo choke hold round his neck. It took him less than a minute to win the match. Once the referee declared him the winner, Pena was congratulated by Guam’s former president, who gave him one of the territory’s traditional necklaces.
To cap it all off, on May 6, 2017, Pena won the ACBJJ Grand Prix in the heavyweight division. He faced Erberth Santos and claimed victory, via a standing bow and arrow. Fresh from his success at the Marianas, Pena scored the evening’s first submission.
During the first round, Santos fought competitively, scoring some sweeps and using a fifty/fifty guard against his opponent. Nonetheless, by the second round, Pena was dominating. He completed a takedown on Santos and jumped onto his back, nailing an eye catching bow and arrow standing choke hold. Of course, all the Gracie Barra Northridge (TRB) will be bristling with pride.
