The 2018 edition of the Gracie Pro marked the reunion between BJJ and one of its greatest temples, the Maracanãzinho, this weekend. Over 6 thousand people were in attendance across the two days, watching matches in all ages, weight classes and ranks. Finding something to focus on in an event with 2,000 athletes might prove difficult, but Fernando Tererê was hard to miss on Sunday.

Gilbert Durinho was victorious in Gracie Pro 2018’s main fight, whereas Tayane Porfirio and Gustavinho Saraiva did well with consistent performances in their superfights. Additionally, Ericka Almeida and Rudson Mateus were crowned the new absolute champions.

‘Favela blowout’

Fernando Tererê’s Cantagalo community was present in large numbers, pushing their eternal champion in his return to the mat. After a cautious start, the two-time world champion won two points with a nice takedown, retaining the lead until the end and beating Raphael Abi Rihan.

In the duel that pitted two Brazilian UFC fighters against each other, Gilbert Durinho beat Serginho Moraes in the details. Durinho wounded up having his arm raised at the end of a hard-fought match.

Tayane Porfirio and Gustavinho Saraiva had flawless performances. The sitting absolute female world champion shut down Jessica Swanson and subbed her with an armbar, whereas Saraiva squeezed a rear naked choke to defeat Nandão Fernandes.

Ericka Almeida bounced back from losing the medium heavyweight title in a decision by finishing Sabatha Lais in the women’s absolute with a leg lock. Rudson Mateus sat out the super-heavyweight final, but beat the absolute field, besting Guilherme Cordiviola in the final.

Magno Mota used all of his talent to adjust the armbar against Fernando Soares and conquer the light featherweight division, while Rafael Braga attacked Victor Oliveira’s leg to claim the super-heavyweight title. Kennedy Guilherme swept Douglas Rufino with five seconds to go, taking a decisive lead in the featherweight final.
