I normally reserve Thursday for a technique of the week, but today is a rare exception. Recently, Jens Pulver, former UFC Lightweight Champion, took a fight with a nine-year-old boy. His nephew, Omar Garcia, was born with a heart defect and has been in and out of the hospital since birth, undergoing numerous surgeries.
Omar has been wanting to be an MMA fighter like his uncle, so Pulver and a regional MMA promotion gave him a night to remember. In his professional debut against Pulver, he “won” via tapout to strikes. After the bout, he was awarded a championship belt, and gave an interview to the ring announcer.
Pulver stated, “They gave him a walkout and then they gave him the belt at the end, I just about lost it. I didn’t know he was going to get a belt, so it was really cool to give him that opportunity… It’s the reason why I started MMA, to give back…”
