Tap Cancer Out (TCO) is one of the jiu-jitsu world’s most well-known charity organizations, and it’s easy to see why. Last year, the nonprofit had raised over $1.4 million for organizations that support cancer research and patients, and they’re not letting the hectic events of this year stop them from reaching for the stars yet again.
This year, TCO will be hosting a Global Grappling Day — a worldwide remote event in which anyone can participate. All they need is a partner, some mat space, and one hour.
The event, which will take place on December 12 of this year, will follow up months of fundraising. The organization aims to raise $100,000, but given that they’re already past the $94,000 mark, there’s a solid chance they’ll not only meet that goal, but also surpass it.
The rolling portion of the event will be a symbol of solidarity for people who are fighting cancer. “After months of fundraising, on December 12th pairs of grapplers will roll for one hour straight in honor of those who can’t stop fighting after just one hour, one day, or even one year. We’re fighting for all the cancer warriors that are in the fight of their lives,” says a statement on the TCO website.
Participants will roll for an hour straight, though TCO encourages grapplers to take small breaks for water and rest if they need it, comparing the endeavor to a 5k run. There will also be prizes for outstanding fundraising efforts, including clothing, gear, and even a jiu-jitsu getaway.
