In BJJ it is worth using judoka’s advice when it comes to stand up technique and also for ground work. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu comes from judo for a reason, and the techniques of this martial art should be implemented in BJJ training. Of course, this technique has to be adapted to the BJJ rules.
When rolling in a BJJ setting with a judoka with good Newaza (ground work) there are a few things that you should watch out for:
- It will be very hard to maintain control in the cross position as they will be frantically bridging left and right trying to reverse you.
- They have a heavy top game. If they control or pin you, they will do a very good job of blocking you.
- If you attack their turtle position, they will always trap your far arm that you use to wrap around their hip, and attempt to roll you over.
- They have sneaky submissions that you will rarely see in BJJ.
- Their turtle attacks and revearsals are deadly.
Judoka Mike Lee (http://www.h2oma.com/) and Stephan Kesting (http://www.grapplearts.com) teach attacks from, and against, the turtle position at a seminar in downtown Vancouver (athttp://www.infightingmma.com)
