Substars has come and gone and not only did it provide a night of elite professional grappling but it also results in a pretty sizable donation to charity thanks in part to the generosity of the king, Gordon Ryan. The We Defy Foundation would have ended up with a great deal more money had the event gone off without a hitch, as Garry Tonon was set to make the same donation. Sadly, a last minute eye injury forced Tonon off the card and scrapped his bout with Dustin Poirier, as he has a blossoming MMA career of his own at ONE FC to consider. This wasn’t the only change to the card in the final week as the matchmakers managed to scrounge up a fantastic fight between Nicky Ryan and Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante.
The card was stacked from top to bottom, but the main event was a relatively short one and was probably overshadowed a little by the epic match that came before it. Cyborg and Rafael Lovato Jr battled for what felt like an age as neither man was able to score points in overtime and they needed a total of seven overtime extensions to finally decide a winner. This meant that the pair fought for a total of 24 minutes before Cyborg was finally able to hit a sweep on the former Bellator MMA Middleweight World Champion to win the match.
Gordon Ryan then faced off with Aaron “Tex” Johnson in the main event and despite both fighters being known for leg attacks, Ryan showed he was a whole level above Tex. As Tex pulled guard early on in the match and attempted to get his leglock game started but Ryan was patiently working his way out of everything and advancing to mount slowly but surely. As he got to mount, Ryan started to lock up an Arm Triangle until Tex used a great deal of energy to explode out of the submission. He recovered guard and started to elevate Ryan to work on another leg attack from Single Leg X but again, Ryan defended and passed with relative ease. When he got to mount this time he was a lot quicker working on the Arm Triangle and as he sunk it in deep, Tex was forced to tap.
In the post-match interview, Ryan confirmed what pretty much everyone already knew: The news of his retirement a few months ago was purely to help generate interest from the media and he’s here to stay for the foreseeable future. Full Substars Results can be found below.
