If you missed last weekend’s featuring of BJJ Cop’s jiu-jitsu-in-law-enforcement video, kick this one off with a glimpse of what happens when police in the field apply practical grappling to totally impractical life choices by street thugs.
This clip shows how effortlessly a white belt level takedown (followed by top mount) can neutralize a charging threat. As poster Clesio Geraldo of Our Martial Arts artfully explains: “When you know how to do it, it’s easy.” No guns, no muss, no fuss, and ultimately minimal damage to the assailant who gets a solid view of sky but otherwise exits the life-threatening choice of running at an armed cop unscathed.
It’s unfortunate that like most places, even Brazil itself, do not subsidize or standardize BJJ as part of police training. Geraldo mentions in the comments that “[police] are not subsidised to train in private academies…and do not receive training in their workplaces.” If you’re a martial arts gym owner not already offering discounts for law enforcement members or coordinating free training for your local precinct, do the right thing and reach out to those in the line of duty and introduce them to the gentle art. It could be a life saving effort.
