In a courageous moment reminiscent of Katniss Everdeen’s famous Hunger Games sacrifice, Steve-O has volunteered as tribute to replace Tom Cruise in a potential fight with pop singer Justin Bieber.
If you’re not up to speed on this bizarre act of celebrity look-at-me-ism, this all started because Bieber called out Cruise on Twitter, challenging him to an MMA fight. No one knows why, really. I don’t even think Bieber knows why. But people were interested, and one of those people turned out to be Dana White, who seems to actually be considering making this happen if Cruise accepts Bieber’s challenge.
Alas, therein lies the problem: Cruise hasn’t responded to the callout (yet). Jackass‘ Steve-O, however, has.
In an interview with TMZ, Steve-O expressed his initial disappointment in not being the one called out by Bieber. He added that he’d flown out to Las Vegas to speak directly with Dana White. “He agreed that if Tom Cruise doesn’t step up and someone needs to fill the cage with Justin Bieber, then I’m the guy,” he said, adding that he and White “shook on it.”
Is he joking? Is he serious? At this point, it’s hard to tell if any of this is real or if we’re just trapped in MMA purgatory.
Realistically, though, Steve-O wouldn’t be a terrible choice for a hypothetical celebrity MMA match. His antics in the Jackass films prove that he can endure a lot of pain — and in the interview above, he claimed that if he got choked by Bieber (who, for what it’s worth, seems to know at least a tiny bit of jiu-jitsu), he’d choose to go to sleep rather than tapping out. Plus, he’s “only” 45, making him eleven years younger than Cruise.
