Jiu-Jitsu black belts who are approved to be part of a new team of instructors for Project School-Jitsu in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, public schools will be paid an excellent salary of a few thousand dollars a month (the folks from Abu Dhabi would rather reveal the actual sum during the interview), health insurance, vacations with paid air fare to the country of origin.
The new-teacher selection process begins next week in São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro. There are 45 openings for teachers with experience with children’s classes. Interested parties should appear at the interview location with printed copy of the form (click here) filled out and their Jiu-Jitsu CV.
GRACIEMAG.com spoke with José Júnior “Ciência”, the black belt responsible for hiring Brazilian teachers. (Watch “Ciência” against Xande Ribeiro in the final in Abu Dhabi.)
ABU DHABI HIRING JIU-JITSU TEACHERS
We want to bring qualified professionals over to work in Jiu-Jitsu in the United Arab Emirates, a region where the sport is growing by leaps and bouts, with numerous projects for teaching the art in schools and on army bases across the country. Thanks to that, openings and opportunities abound for those who are committed to good work, have experience, speak English, are technically proficient and have the documents pertaining to their black belt in order.
FORTY-FIVE MALE AND FEMALE JIU-JITSU TEACHERS
In all there will be 45 teachers, of which we will need both men and women. We have yet to see how many fit the profile, which we’ll know after conducting the interviews.
HIRING IN USA POSSIBLE IN THE FUTURE
For the time being we don’t have any plans for that, but it could happen. We hired a lot of people in the past by conducting interviews over the phone or Skype or by recommendation; however, now we’re looking to do it directly, if just to give people who don’t know anyone over here a chance. So all they have to do is show up there, take their CV and hope for the best. We’ll see how it goes in the future; we usually want Brazilians, wherever they may be.
THE LIFE OF A JIU-JITSU BLACK BELT IN ABU DHABI
My life is great, thank God; I make a living doing what I love, which is Jiu-Jitsu, and I even get to train in the meantime. I am positive the sport will grow even more around here, as it will in the rest of the world, and that makes me really happy and fulfilled. Right now I’m not teaching; I became more involved in the administrative side as a supervisor in Abu Dhabi. It was the way I found to contribute a bit more. So I’m hard at work, really hoping things continue going well for not just me but a lot of people and families who have the opportunity to be here and be valued for knowing how to teach Jiu-Jitsu. We are certainly writing the history of the sport and a country.
GRUELING JIU-JITSU TRAINING
My training has been going well; there’s a cool group here that trains all day, and God willing this year I’ll make some noise on the competition scene. We have a new physical conditioning coach from Bulgaria who’s awesome, and we have teachers from a lot of different academies, so training has been great. I hope to be in good form this year, as I’m training a lot better than I was last year, and I’m sure I’ll be fighting for gold at weight and open weight at the Abu Dhabi pro tournament.
