Royce Gracie: “Many instructors need to focus more on teaching self-defense rather than racking up points in competition”

BJJ is an abbreviation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that’s been growing in popularity throughout the world. It’s been divided into two categories: Sport-style  Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The second type is geared towards self-defense instruction rather than competitive matches. Royce Gracie recently spoke out about the family’s goal of keeping up the traditional techniques that prepare students to defend themselves in street fights if they ever find themselves in that kind of situation. A sport that uses a point system for sparring matches does little if any good when the need for true self defense is needed. Gracie also expressed the opinion that many instructors need to focus more on teaching defense techniques than on teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students how to rack up points and compete in matches.
