Rolling backtakes have become part of modern jiu-jitsu but are undeniably intimidating.
To help you become comfortable with the idea of doing a somersault and ending up on someone’s back, here’s the simplest rolling backtake you can do.
First, learn to identify the trigger position (which is 3/4 mount)…
Then make sure his hands are on one side of your body…
Then roll in line with the back of his body…
Finally, find yourself magically transported to his back!
Here’s a video of this move breaking it down for you with easy-to-follow instructions.
We’ll cover many details, tweaks, and variations of the rolling back take at some point in the future, but until then, I just want to get you hitting this move so that you learn to believe in it.
Let me know how this goes!

P.S. If you get the chance, check out my instructional Omoplata 2.0.
The omoplata is my favorite submission. It’s the most versatile attack in jiu-jitsu, and works with the gi, without the gi, and even in MMA.
With my new system for teaching this amazing technique I think it’ll become one of your favorite submissions too.
It’s available in online streaming, app and DVD form. Click here to find out more about the Omoplata 2.0 instructional,
Thanks ever so much
