Worldwide, there are an estimated 47 million people living with Alzheimer’s and other
dementias, and it is the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. You may think there’s not much you can do to help, but one brown belt in Jackson, Mississippi is giving you that chance.
Jessica Buckner is a brown belt under Jarrett Becks at No Limit Combatives, and she’s no stranger to the effects of Alzheimer’s. Losing her mother to the disease as a teenager, and then her grandmother when she was in college, Jessica has always sought to spread awareness.
As an adult, Jessica began her career with the Alzheimer’s Association, Mississippi Chapter as a volunteer, but now works on staff as they continue to fund research, raise awareness, and increase support for those affected throughout the state. She also saw an opportunity to combine her two greatest passions for a greater good.
“Held annually on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.” The event Jessica has organized is Roll2Remember, and it is a 16 hour roll-a-thon benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association, Mississippi Chapter..
Black belts Randall Powell, Jarrett Becks, and Anthony Mitchell, as well as BJJ instructor Houston Cottrell will be on hand for several seminars throughout the day on June 16th from 6am to 10pm.
