The last Strikeforce event ever was held last Saturday in Oklahoma City, and the promotion’s finale lived up to its hype.
“Jacaré” Souza, Roger Gracie, Josh Barnett and Gegard Mousasi won their fights handily, demonstrating a bona fide arsenal of submissions and showing why they were regarded as hands-down favorites going in.
Another big name on the night was Daniel Cormier, who fed Holland’s Dion Staring a steady stream of takedowns and elbows up until the end of the second round.
In the main event of the evening, Belgium’s Tarec Saffiedine made good use of his kicks and gas tank to take a unanimous decision over Nate Marquardt and claim the welterweight belt as his.
In a poll of Strikeforce fans, the promotion asked what the greatest moment of the event’s history was on Facebook. In first place by a hefty margin was the fall of the legendary Fedor Emelianenko, who announced his retirement from fighting in 2012. Following a ten-year unbeaten streak, he lost three fights in a row under the Strikeforce banner to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Bigfoot and Dan Henderson.
