None of the parties involved in a viral bathroom bar fight in Norman, Oklahoma, will be charged with assault, according to a report from MMA Fighting.
Cleveland County (Oklahoma) District Attorney Greg Mashburn has declined to move forward with assault charges against the individuals involved in the now-famous brawl at Logie’s on the Corner, which included OU football player Spencer Jones and brothers Walker and Braden Brown, who are MMA practitioners.
In a press release, Mashburn said the following regarding his decision: “We have carefully considered the entirety of the circumstances surrounding the incident including a previous altercation between the parties and the actions that led up to the physical fight caught on camera by a bystander. My office has decided that no criminal charges are appropriate as this appears to be a mutual combat situation in which both parties voluntarily engaged in a fist fight.”
The altercation took place in mid-February, with the video filmed by a bystander appearing on Twitter on February 19. The incident appears to begin with a verbal argument, which escalates after Jones’ companion shoves Walker, whose nose was already bloodied. Both Brown brothers then go after Jones and his companion, with Walker putting Jones into a rear naked choke. The clip has since racked up over 8.6 million views.
Walker then shared a GoFundMe created to support his medical costs, which included a torn bicep. Jones underwent a four-hour surgery to repair his orbital bone.
Walker’s attorney shared an update on the situation on the GoFundMe page following the announcement from the district attorney.
“We have received confirmation from Greg Mashburn, Cleveland County District Attorney, that his office has declined to file any criminal charges against my client stemming from the events of February 13, 20201. We appreciate the thorough investigation conducted by Norman Police Detectives Brett Willer and Brian Franks. Despite attempts to convey alternative narratives by others, these Detectives remained vigilant in seeking out the truth about this incident.
Walker’s bicep surgery was successful and he is recovering well. He again would like to convey his appreciation for all of the support he has received as a result of this situation. He remains overwhelmed by the encouragement he has received from friends and strangers through calls, texts and internet posts.
Although this closes the chapter on this incident as far as criminal liability, we are waiting to see if any civil lawsuits are filed. Our law firm stands ready to vigorously defend Walker against any cases brought against him by anyone associated with this situation. This being said, Walker will be unable to comment on the events of that evening until we know whether there will be future litigation.
