The lightweight final between Nathalie Ribeiro and Nikki Sullivan was a quick, but action-packed match at this year’s IBJJF No-Gi Pan American Championships. In under two minutes, Ribeiro displayed both great fundamental jiu-jitsu and some flashy transition work that left the crowd screaming.
Ribeiro got her momentum going by literally leaping straight into mount as Sullivan changed levels. Sullivan inverted to try to use her feet to pry Ribeiro off her, eventually trapping one of her opponent’s legs in half-guard. Ribeiro transitioned back to mount, initially appearing to work to isolate an arm before she worked for a back take. Sullivan managed to roll out of immediate danger at first, but once Ribeiro secured a body triangle, it was only a matter of seconds before she also managed to lock in a rear naked choke. Sullivan tapped, and Ribeiro claimed her lightweight title in under two minutes in the finals.
