Mikey Musumeci Shares The Secret For Never Getting Tired of Jiu-Jitsu Even After Training for 22 Years

26-year-old Mikey Musumeci will defend his 26-pound One Championship gold belt in a co-main event grappling superfight clash against Osamah Almarwai at the sold-out 1stBank Center in Colorado this Friday, May 5, at ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III on Prime Video.

In a recent interview with One Championship, Musumeci talked about topics leading up to the event.

What’s a typical day of training like in the shoes of Mikey Musumeci?

I’d probably get up at 9 a.m, I’d roll for an hour and then drill for another hour. Then what I would
do is I would rest, probably for an hour, and study jiu-jitsu that hour. I’ll study that for an hour,
take notes, and then I’ll add things in that I see them doing problems with.
I’m doing that after the two hours of training. And then I climb – like, another hour of climbing –
and then I’ll do another hour of conditioning, like cardio, running, or aerodynamics. Then I’ll do
another hour of training at night and then another hour of drilling. And then another four hours of
studying videos.

Do you ever get tired of jiu-jitsu?

Honestly, no. It’s so crazy. And it’s crazy how I still am figuring out and developing new things.
Eventually, you think they would stop because you’re training for 22 years, you’re doing a move,
and that should be it. It’s going to be done. But then, I go to training today or tomorrow, and I still
get a new thing. And it’s like, ‘How did I just come up with something new?’ It’s crazy. And it’s
just constant. The reason why I love jiu-jitsu is that I’m constantly solving puzzles, and I’m
figuring new things out. So, it makes it really fun for me.

Your opponent at ONE Fight Night 10, Osamah Almarwai, is a very good tactician on the
canvas. What are some of his strengths?

Osamah is an intelligent fighter. He has a high IQ, for sure. He’s very strategic in what he does
and when he does it. He has a good kiss of the dragon and a good foot lock. He has some good
attacks. I think he’s a great opponent for me, and he’s going to push me to come out on May 5th
and go hard.

How do you see your submission grappling battle against Almarwai panning out?

Well, with the rules of ONE Championship, I don’t have to play strategically with points. I don’t
have to think of all these different strategies and advantages. And I could just go in and try to
finish the fight. So, I don’t really care where the fight is. Am I a wrestler? Definitely not. But when
I’m talking about pure jiu-jitsu on the floor, I don’t care if I’m on top. I don’t care if I’m at the
bottom. I’m prepared to go anywhere in this match. I told you, I study this all day. And I’m really
excited. It’s an honor for me to compete with Osamah.

Do you have any surprises for fans or Almarwai in this battle?

I would say I have six holy grail sequences in my mind that I have on standby. And I just want to
hit one of these six, especially in this match. I mean, what I do is I eventually hit these holy grail
moves on everyone in training. And now it’s like, ‘Okay, I did it in training. Now, do it in
competition.’ And in my next six matches, I want to hit at least one of these in the next six, each
one to get the validation.

What are some of the burning questions in your head before your ONE Fight Night 10
battle?

My style is just to go forward and attack for the kill every second. So, the question is going to
be: does Osamah have counters to my attacks? And do I have answers to his counters? Do I? I
prepare every second, too. Will I have the answers to Osamah’s reactions? We’ll see. Do I
believe I do? I don’t know. We’ll see. Again, we’ll find out in the match, and the match doesn’t lie.
Your jiu-jitsu doesn’t lie when you’re out there. That’s what’s amazing about jiu-jitsu.
