Recently, jiu-jitsu legend Marcelo Garcia gave a video interview to offer advice to novice jiu-jitsu students. Garcia recommended that new students should experiment with different techniques, to find the ones that suit them best. After this, Garcia says, they will become more technically minded and better able to understand how the moves can be applied. This approach can be adopted throughout all stages of a student’s development. Garcia also advises beginners to stay calm and focused during competitions. He mentioned that, when he started competing, he would often get nervous and that this hindered his performance.
