Lovato, Guto Campos shine with double gold at World Master Championship

Rafael Lovato Jr.: two years, four titles. IBJJF

The year’s biggest gathering of BJJ veterans has begun. The 2017 World Master Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship started this week in Las Vegas, and this Thursday saw plenty of action go down.

The master 1 and master 2 age groups were featured on day 1. Rafael Lovato Jr. (Ribeiro JJ) earned double gold at master 1, and Guto Campos (Atos JJ) did the same at master 2.

An adult world champion, Lovato fought and won seven times. In the super-heavyweight division he submitted all of his first three opponents to reach the final against Alan Régis (Tatuapu Team), whom he proceeded to beat on points. In the open division, Lovato won his first match on points, then finished Josh Hinger, and finally got a win over Rafael Formiga (Soul Fighters) after passing guard and scoring three points.

At master 2, Guetho Jiu-Jitsu co-leader Guto Campos represented Atos JJ. His double gold campaign started with a medium heavyweight final victory over Eder Persiliano (DDR JJ), achieved with a sweep and takedown. In the absolute, Guto and Eder faced off again. This time Guto edged Eder out on advantages.

Women’s

At master 1, brave Jena Bishop (Gracie Humaitá) wanted more than just the lightweight title she had secured. She threw down with heavier athletes and beat the absolute field as she outplayed super-heavyweight runner-up Hillary VanOrnum (Impact Jiu-Jitsu).

At master 2, it was Luana Beatriz (Ribeiro JJ) who cleaned up. After taking down the super-heavyweight class, she won the absolute final over Kristine Felts (Peak Performance).

Read on for the black belt results of the master 1 and master 2 age groups.
