Learn Champ Rita Lynne Gribben’s PanAm Winning Loop Choke

Black belt Rita Lynne Gribben has been a force in jiu-jitsu for years, appearing on mats everywhere from IBJJF to EBI to F2W to Submission Underground. Last week she added another superlative to an already impressive resume: PanAm champion.

She topped the podium using a submission she’s never thrown in competition before–the loop choke, a savage favorite of gi nerds everywhere. (First time is a charm, right?)

We asked Gribben to break down the choke that helped her bring home another piece of shiny hardware. And since she’s a professional engineer in civilian life, you can trust this technique is on point.

Shoutout to Gribben’s tutorial uke and training partner, Gabrielle McComb, who also took gold last week in PanAm’s adult lightweight division. Gribben reports Gabi “always tried to loop choke me, so maybe that’s where my body automatically came up with that attack.”
