Houston Tipping, a 5-year veteran of the LAPD, has died due to spinal injuries that were caused during a grappling training exercise with another officer at the LAPD’s Elysian Park Academy on Thursday.
Tipping, 32, served as a bike instructor in the Devonshire area. Reports from LAPD state that Officer Tipping fell to the floor and suffered a “catastrophic spinal injury.” Officer’s quickly came to his aid with CPR and called LA Fire and Paramedics before rushing him to USC Medical Center, where he died from the injuries.
LAPD is now investing to ‘identify if any additional measures can be taken to ensure such a tragedy is avoided in the future,’ says Police Chief Michel Moore. Moore described Tipping as a “bright and uplifting young man”.
This news comes at a time when Police departments around the world are reforming their physical training with Jiu-Jitsu and seeing incredible results. For example, the Marrieta, GA Police Department was able to reduce injuries to suspects by 53%, and suspects were 200% more likely to be injured by an officer without jiu-jitsu training than an officer with the training. The training saved the department almost $70,000 in the first year.
The Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) have become a go-to training program for law enforcement agencies who are looking to implement jiu-jitsu into their training regiments. With Gracie University being located in Torrance, and countless world-class jiu-jitsu gyms to be found throughout Los Angeles county, there is truly no excuse for the LAPD to be lacking in this area outside of negligence.
If LAPD were to adopt jiu-jitsu training for their agency, this would be a landmark as possibly the largest law enforcement agency to formally adopt the training yet. Clearly, the need is there for the LAPD. Now, they just need to make the commitment.
A bright and uplifting young man with a full life in front of him. Grief, sorrow and sadness.
