A 10-year-old boy who was determined to be a Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion died after getting the flu.
Robert John “Bobby” Smylie died tragically on February 4 while watching a Toronto Raptors game at home.
His death came without warning.
“He was sitting on the couch with me head-to-head, watching the Raptors and cheering them on … He was smiling and very chatty and talkative,” his father told The Hamilton Spectator.
After being taken to a hospital, he died later that night.
According to the Spectator, his passion was Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he was determined to win the Ontario Championships in April.
Every day he was doing 100 chinups, 100 situps, 100 pushups and wrestling with me every night,” his dad said. “He wasn’t the biggest kid but he was the strongest kid. He was determined and focused. He was very self-motivated.
