Kaynan Duarte is one of the hardest working men in BJJ and he’s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. He’s just been announced as the third entrant for the Polaris Absolute Grand Prix on April 4th in Newport, South Wales. This comes after the initial reveal of Patrick Gaudio taking part, followed by the news that he’ll be joined by one of the UK’s best Heavyweight grapplers, Freddie Vosgrone.
Duarte is a grappler who always enters big, single-night tournaments and as such he was a favorite to take part in the Polaris Absolute Grand Prix from day one. He had a fantastic year in these kinds of invitational tournaments last year, starting off by winning the Kasai Heavyweight Championship at Kasai Pro 5. He then stepped back into a gi and flew all the way to Korea to take on some of the best modern BJJ athletes in the Spyder Invitational and came away with the trophy again.
In between these performances, Kaynan Duarte also wrote his name in the history books by becoming the ADCC 2019 Heavyweight Champion. He did make an attempt to win double gold by entering the Absolute Division but was stopped in his tracks by Lachlan Giles’ epic and unstoppable performance.
While any match with Duarte will be fun to watch, It will be especially interesting to see if the stars align and he faces off against Patrick Gaudio. The two were originally scheduled to compete against each other at Kasai Pro 7 before Duarte dropped out of the tournament.
