The jiu-jitsu world officially has a new coral belt now that Julio “Foca” Fernandez has been promoted.
Fernandez earned the rank last month after receiving his black belt over thirty years ago from Carlson Gracie Sr. One of his students, Redditor u/bobrossjiujitsu, shared the news yesterday, providing some of Fernandez’s accomplishments and describing what it means to have him as part of the jiu-jitsu community.
“As Carlson Sr. has since passed away, his son, Carlson Gracie Jr., and Julio’s longtime training partner and teammate, Rodrigo Medeiros, decided to honor Julio with the promotion. Julio is 5x Brazilian National Champion, 3x Rio de Janeiro State Champion, and 2x World Masters Champion. He owns and operates an academy in Williston, Vermont. We’re a small state with few opportunities for training, and we are very fortunate to have him here with us.”
If you ever make it up to Williston, Vermont, make sure you check out Fernandez’s academy, BJJ Revolution Team.
