Bia Basílio after securing her absolute title. Ilan Pellenberg
It was a long weekend with the anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil, but the right destination for Jiu-Jitsu fanatics was far from the beaches or traditional sights. Busy Barueri, in São Paulo, was the place to be for competitors on November 15, 16 and 17, with the CBJJ South American Jiu-Jitsu Championship taking place.
With contest in all divisions of weight, belt and age, the icing on the cake once again came from the black belt duels, with two prominent names: Bia Basílio (Almeida JJ) and Yan Pica-Pau (Ribeiro JJ) .
Already a veteran of competitions as a black belt, the young Bia Basilio had another flawless campaign. First, the she won lightweight gold by beating Luciane Silva (CheckMat) in the final. Then, undaunted by bigger athletes, the petite Bia leaped into the absolute and won two fights before meeting Thamara Araújo (Cícero Costha), a medium heavyweight who eventually fell victim to the famous straight foot lock, a specialty of Almeida JJ team beautifully employed here by Bia.

In the men’s section, the standout was Yan Pica-Pau. After stumbling in the medium heavyweight division, losing in the semi-final to then-champion Matheus Spirandeli (Alliance), Yan returned for the open division. He beat Ricardo Pingo and Ygor Silva before meeting Dimitrius Souza, the heavyweight champion of the day, and going past him into the final against Rafael Paganini (Alliance). The match was intense, and after the tie on the scoreboard the decision of the referees was for Yan, who was thrilled with the win.
