Of all of the creatures in the animal kingdom, the turtle has one of the toughest defenses around. It’s no wonder that in Jiu-Jitsu we’ve named our most defensive position after it. When an opponent curls up on their elbows and knees, they become very difficult to submit.
For new and experienced practitioners alike, the turtle can be a very frustrating position to encounter. While there are many ways to break down the turtle position, I’d like to share one of my personal favorites that I have had a high rate of success with. I first learned this one from Professor Mark Massey in Pocatello, Idaho. It’s called the Rodeo Turnover.
