Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was revealed to have tested positive for the novel coronavirus ahead of UFC 249, and now, his two cornermen have also received positive test results.
Souza’s own health update has led to him being immediately removed from the card. Souza had told UFC officials that he’d had contact with a family member who’d contracted COVID-19. Though the fighter wasn’t showing any symptoms, he still tested positive for the virus, and the UFC’s official statement said that the cornermen who’d tested positive were also asymptomatic.
The statement continues, “As per UFC’s health and safety protocols, all three men have left the host hotel and will be self-isolating off premises, where UFC’s medical team will monitor their conditions remotely and will provide assistance with any necessary treatment.
“From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible.”
The company also praised its own coronavirus response plan.
“There have been no other positive COVID-19 tests reported from the remaining athletes participating in UFC 249. The response to this development is indicative of the effectiveness of the health and safety measures UFC has put in place for this event.”
Though Souza will no longer be facing off against Hall, the rest of UFC 249 is still moving ahead in Jacksonville, Florida later tonight.
