Is Craig Jones Retiring From Competing In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Craig Jones is one of the best known and most skilled Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors of his generation…
But is he retiring from competition?

That was one of the questions that Jones decided to answer in a recent video.
And no, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to retire anytime soon – though he is picky with his match choices:

Definitely not retired. If the match is a good match, I’ll take it.

What you guys have to understand is, 5 years ago – I would just take a match.
I would be travelling around, doing seminars, rolling with people at seminars, randomly show up at a superfight…

However, Craig Jones takes competition preparation much more seriously nowadays:

These days, when I wanna take a superfight, I wanna treat it like an MMA camp. I wanna do cardio, strength and conditioning, I wanna take my diet seriously…
I wanna dedicate 8-12 weeks to that superfight.

I wanna give it the attention it deserves. I don’t want to show up out of shape, I don’t want to show up putting on a bad performance.
That’d be really detrimental to my career.

But the real issue of preparing for a competition and then competing is in the money which he’d lose while doing so:

The real issue with doing that is… I don’t just compete for money, but the money has to be right.

If I were to dedicate three months of my life to competing… Yes, I would get some exposure benefits, yes it would be good if I win – it would help me market the DVDs.
But, at the end of the day, the purse for a match like that – I lose so much money making the sacrifice to compete.

I literally lose so much money.

Obviously, I want to be in the gym. I want to be helping the students at the gym.
[And] if I’m travelling, I can do seminars. I can spend a lot of time planning and filming instructionals, obviously we have YouTube and we want to keep producing great YouTube content for you guys, I’ve got the podcast coming…

I’ve got a lot of revenue streams that have to take the back seat for me to seriously dedicate myself to a superfight.
