IBJJF Rules for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition

If you want to know how to compete in BJJ it’s absolutely critical to know the rules.

If you’re planning on competing then you’re likely going to spend hundreds of hours on the mat training getting ready.  Blood, sweat and tears will be spent in preparation.

Wouldn’t it suck to spend all that time, stress and energy getting ready to compete and then not be allowed to compete because you’ve got a gi patch in the wrong place?  Or lose because you didn’t get points for properly finalising a position.  Or get kicked out of the tournament because you broke some obscure application of the leg reaping rule or not wearing the right kind of underwear (not joking)?

So it pays to do your research.

Here’s an excellent 1 hour video summary of the IBJJF competition rules that I discovered online.  It’s by Nicolas Gregoriades who is a Roger Gracie black belt, competitor and noted instructor.

This video covers everything from the details of getting points, the penalties that could lose you the match, and the fouls that could get you thrown out of the competition altogether.

It’s great.  Check it out below:

P.S.  To get a good introduction to BJJ check out the free downloadable copy of my Roadmap for BJJ book.  Armed with the information in this book you’ll be totally set to acquire a really solid foundation for this amazing martial art.
