A little over 3 years ago, I was in the middle of setting up shop at a new location. Everything was in disarray, the mats were still being put down.
I heard a knock at the door and was greeted by a platinum blonde with long acrylic nails and a gentlemen(her brother).
At the time, I assumed the person interested in classes was the young man, only to be told ‘No, this is my brother, he came for the ride. I’m the one that wants to try Jiu Jitsu’
And that was my introduction to Gabbi…
I didn’t think Gabbi would last past a class, she did. I didn’t think she’d made it a week, she did. I didn’t think she’d make it a month…she did.
A funny side story: Gabbi goes to Columbia in NYC and went to a fight shop to buy a Gi, she had no idea how things worked and she asked for the Gi and the Purple Belt to match…the clerk asked if she was a purple belt, and she said ‘I just started this week’ and the clerk said, ‘You have to wait to earn this color.’
I’ve watched Gabbi’s stages of evolution. I’ve watched her go from the ‘Spazzy’ white belt to a very technical and successfully competitive blue belt.
She’s had terrible days and nights on the mats, she probably thought about quitting several times…but she didn’t.
She asked for feedback on what she needed to change, listened and made the necessary changes to keep improving.
In the 3+ years that has literally flown by, I’ve got to watch Gabbi grow and evolve off the mats as well.
From a quiet introvert, to an outgoing role model for the young girls and women of the academy.
Gabbi has frequently put in 3-a-days, all while pursuing her Masters in Psychology, where she’ll be entering into her doctorates program later this year.
