How To Train BJJ If You Can’t Afford To Pay For an Academy

So, you want to train Jiu Jitsu… And, whether you want to continue training or just get started on your BJJ journey, the problem is the same – you don’t have the money for it!
Look, we get it. You may be a student who doesn’t have the extra resources at your disposal to pay for the Gi and for the classes. You may have just experienced a rough patch in your career, or you may simply come from a not so great financial background…

However, if you truly love Jiu Jitsu, there are things that you can do in order to get around monetary problems – and to start, or continue, doing what you love.

LOOK AT YOUR EXPENSES

Alright, for starters: are you absolutely sure that you don’t have the money for BJJ? Or is it that you are simply spending it on other things?

Sure, some things are of utmost priority, such as bills, food, education… And so on. However, when all of that is paid for, what do you do with the cash that remains in your pocket? You may be spending it too excessively when you go out, on the cable TV which you don’t really watch anymore, or on the clothes that you don’t need.
Whatever the case may be, the fact is that your money may be draining from your wallet because of unimportant things. So, ask yourself: is that cable TV more important than your love towards BJJ is? Is it more important to you than your health?

Fix those financial leaks and then redirect the stream towards Jiu Jitsu.

FIGURE OUT A WAY TO EARN THE EXTRA MONEY

If you’ve managed to cut out all of the unnecessary expenses but still don’t have enough money for Jiu Jitsu, then it’s time to turn your attention towards finding a way to earn that cash!

Sure, jobs may or may not be plentiful at the place you live in, or that may or may not pay much… But still, there are jobs out there, jobs that you can take on – and earn enough money to get yourself to the mats!
If you’re unable, for whatever reason, to find a full-time job, there still are a lot of part-time options and similar approaches that you can take advantage of, especially if you are a student. So, get on your feet and start searching for them – we promise you that you’ll find just the right fit for you, if only you persist at it long enough!

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU CAN DO FOR THE ACADEMY?

Lastly, take a moment to consider if there’s anything that you could offer to your current or future BJJ academy? Something which would bring about enough positive development, so much so that your coach(es) would be willing to exchange their coaching expertise for your service?

You may have a certain skill-set that could be of use. Perhaps you’re an undergraduate marketing student and could offer your coach to put in the necessary efforts to bring more people to your academy. Or, you may be great at designing web pages and could build one for the academy? If you’re an upper belt, you could help with the kids and beginners classes… Or, if you’re just getting started, you could – quite simply – offer to clean the mats after each and every training session.

Whatever your financial situation may be at the moment, there’s something that you can do about it. Fix your monetary leaks. Find a part-time job. Talk to your coach… And you’ll be able to roll as much as your heart desires.
