It is important to note that the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) is strictly prohibited in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitions and can result in serious consequences such as suspensions, bans and damage to an athlete’s reputation.
While some BJJ organizations or competitions may have drug testing policies in place, most do not, especially the smaller events due to a lack of funds.
One example of drug testing in BJJ is with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), which conducts random drug tests at some of its events. They maintain a list of prohibited substances and methods that are banned under their Anti-Doping Policy. In contrast, the ADCC (biggest No Gi grappling organization) does not drug test and it is often assumed that many finalists are using steroids due to a relaxed stance on PED’s and steroids.
Various BJJ athletes have been banned for using PEDS including Felipe Pena, Kaynan Duarte and Braulio Estima who have all been suspended for periods ranging from six months to twelve months.
The use of PEDs is not limited to professional competitors however; regular hobbyists may also be driven by a desire to gain a competitive edge; enhance physical performance; speed up recoveries or improve their self-image. For this reason it is important to prioritize health and well-being when competing and ensure that one maintains an ethical approach at all times.
