MMA news is often peppered by revelations that an athlete has tested positive for prohibited substances, whether due to contaminated permitted supplements or the deliberate intake of PEDs. But a few athletes have made their mark in the UFC as being consistently clean athletes, and Holly Holm is the first to be recognized for it.
Holm has been honored for providing fifty clean samples for USADA. She was presented with a custom letterman’s jacket by the UFC VPs of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky and Donna Marcolini at her home gym, Jackson-Wink MMA, on Thursday. She spoke to MMA Junkie about the moment, saying, “It’s an honor to get this, and I’m thankful that there is the test because I know that I’m facing someone who’s also clean. I’ve never wanted to use any kind of performance-enhancing [drug] because it’s something I wanted to know — that I know my own hard work and my will and my passion and everything is something I’ve always relied on for a victory. I feel like it always gave me more of a confidence boost going in knowing that I went in and did it myself and didn’t have any help. I think that’s my mentality for it.”
Joining Holm shortly in being honored for the same milestone in the UFC will be former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Aldo and Cormier have already reached the 50-clean-tests mark as well, and they will reportedly be honored for their achievement in upcoming events.
