Robert Cisar is a blue belt who trains under a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he has a special way to put opponents to sleep with a baseball bat choke. Best of all, he was more than eager to share his tips with the the Jiu-Jitsu Times.
Here they are:
My grips are different from a lot of people. A majority of everyone I see will use either an “s” grip or a gable grip. I think that takes away a lot of extra space you could have to be squeezing your forearms together for a tighter choke. What I use is a grip that doesn’t really have a name. But my bottom hand (under the neck) I will use my last 3 fingers, my top hand (that goes behind the neck) I use my first 3 fingers. I interlock them. When I bring them together, I am able to perfectly bring my elbows together for a very tight choke. Whenever I have tried to use the S grip or gable grip I can’t come close to the type of squeeze and flexibility I get with the 3 fingers on each hand that I do.
Here’s a video of Robert doing his choke.
UPDATE: The original version of this article mistakenly claimed Robert was a third-degree black belt. He’s not. He’s a blue belt. His instructor is a third-degree black belt.
