All new jiu jitsu students are taught to display a simple gesture of respect to their opponents, known as the ‘slap and bump’, prior to commencing combat. Essentially, this is to acknowledge the other fighter, before getting down to business on the mat.
In a recent BJJ contest between Todd Burke and his opponent, which entered the sudden death stage, Todd’s opponent decided to use the goodwill of his opponent to his advantage — by faking the slap and bump gesture, then going for a takedown to claim the match. The referee had to inform Burke that his opponent had not broken any rules.
