Everyone will, at some point in time (and more than once), find themselves stuck in a rut when it comes to getting better in BJJ. You’ll be consistent, try your best, watch instructionals even… But no matter what you do, it will feel like you can’t get any better. Like you can’t get to the next level.
Well, whenever that happens, you should keep in mind that improving in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is much like leveling up in video games. Here’s why.
LEVELING UP IN BJJ & LEVELING UP IN VIDEO GAMES
You’ve probably played a video game or two in your life, right? And you’ve probably found yourself in situations where you can’t break through a particular level; maybe it’s a “boss” you just can’t seem to beat, a mission that’s too hard, or a puzzle that appears unsolvable.
But if you kept playing and if you kept trying, the inevitable would happen – you’d succeed and get to the next level. And then, in retrospect (maybe even while re-playing for fun), you’d think to yourself: “Jeez, why was that mission so hard? It’s so easy now!”
It’s the same thing with BJJ. If you stay persistent enough, you’ll reach that “next level”. Once you do, and as you keep training, you’ll be bewildered by how difficult that “mission” seemed to be; as now you’d be able to win it even with eyes closed.
Therefore, the bottom line remains the same both for BJJ and video games: just keep playing. Keep showing up. And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ll level up over time.
