Garry Tonon has been a busy guy as of late, balancing an undefeated professional MMA career with ONE Championship with a grappling career that saw him take the podium at last year’s ADCC. Now with a 5-0 record with ONE, Tonon is setting his sights higher, and yesterday, he took aim at Martin Nguyen in hopes of a title fight for the organization.
Tonon’s aspirations for fighting Nguyen are high indeed. Nguyen is ONE Championship’s first-ever double champ, having claimed the title in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions. He boasts a record of 13-3, with all but one of his wins coming by way of submission or KO/TKO. Still, Tonon has proven himself to be a worthy adversary, even though he doesn’t have nearly as many fights on his record. Tonon has finished all of his fights so far, ensuring that none of his victories were left up to the judges. And even though his strength clearly lies in grappling, he’s shown he’s no one-trick pony, winning two of his fights via TKO.
Tonon’s challenge to his would-be opponent was respectful, but confident. Now, ONE needs to make the decision of whether Tonon’s success thus far renders him worthy of a title shot against Nguyen.
