The 2013 European Open Championship is underway and livening up the crowd in Lisbon, Portugal. Some of the sport’s new talent has been showing their mettle and getting crowned for it since this Thursday.
Day one was the white and blue belts’ time to shine. Today, the purple-belt results already came in, like lightweight Marcio André of Nova União and heavyweight Tim Springgs of Lloyd Irvin receiving gold medals.
In the absolute, Tim Spriggs had a repeat of his good campaign and took gold, winning four matches on points. After eliminating Marcio Andre, he outpointed Rehan Muttalib of Alliance by 3-0. The 22-year-old whiz trains in Baltimore at Crazy 88 Academy.
In the female absolute, Germany’s Charlotte Von Baumgarten, 25, took top honors. The lightweight from Alliance had three matches at open weight, winning one of them by submission. She defeated Emilie Maxine in the final.
At blue belt, the owner of the men’s absolute throne flew in from far away, from the Northeast Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. Runner-up at lighwteight, Horlando Monteiro of Nova União defeated Khasan Betelgeriev of Alliance with a triangle in the open-weight final and secured gold for his efforts.
Now, the big name in the female absolute is Hanna Tibbling of CheckMat, who tapped out her teammate Mille Pederson with a choke. The Swede also won the heavyweight title.
So far, Alliance is in the lead in the team standings, with 33 points. Lloyd Irvin figures in second with 32, and Nova União is in third with 23.
