Ocean County Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu owner Tom DeBlass has answered the question that most Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners’ minds at some point during their training: do I have to compete to be a black belt?
As is so often the case, DeBlass’ answer is simple, and to-the-points: “NO YOU DO NOT.”
One probably wouldn’t expect this answer from a man who is not only a top competitor in his own right, but has helped produce two of the most famous names in competitive jiu-jitsu: Garry Tonon and Gordon Ryan.
But Professor DeBlass argues that BJJ competitions don’t reflect how much you know.
Jiu-Jitsu competition is a game of winning, it doesn’t always represent how much someone knows. I have beaten guys that know more than me, and guys have beaten me that I know more than.p style=”padding-left: 30px;”>
