On Friday May 6, 2017, Dillon Danis fought AJ Agazarm (from Gracie Barra), in what was a last gasp attempt by both athletes to gain entry to the World IBJJF Championships later in May. This contest, which was part of the Atlanta IBJJF Open, took place in the medium heavy weight class final.
The bout had all the more intrigue, due to the history that these men have with one another. In January 2017, they fought in the Submission Underground III main event. On that occasion, Danis claimed victory after eight minutes of overtime. Nonetheless, in this rematch, with the gi and points involved, Danis brushed aside the jiu jitsu lion using guard passes, numerous submission attempts and sweeps to qualify for the world championships and win the gold medal.
In addition, Danis is training for a match against Jake Shields in a week’s time at Submission Underground 4.
