Impatient to finally get better at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, eh? Yeah, we totally get it; sometimes, it just seems as if you’re not making any progress whatsoever. Or, what’s more, that you’re actively falling behind your training partners and opponents, in terms of skill. This worries you… And how couldn’t it? You’re investing all of this time and energy into a martial art you love, and yet you’re not improving as much as you’d like to.
But, hold up. Take a pause, and a deep breath or two. And keep training – because all of your BJJ woes will be solved by PERSISTENCE & CONSISTENCY.
If you could choose one bjj super power what would it be?
BJ Penn type flexibility? Bruno Malfacine’s speed? Cyborg strength? Danaher’s mind?
I NEVER considered myself that guy who had ANY natural gifting. But if I had to choose one thing that helped me earn my black belt it would have to be my ability to remain consistent.
I popped my ribs 4 months into training but still showed up to class to watch and take notes.
Staph infection, wrapped it up and watched from the side.
Married and kids, still made time to train.
There were definitely training partners who progressed faster than me but I was determined to just keep going even when I didn’t feel like I was making much progress.
Much like financial investing I believe there is compound growth when you remain consistent and stack days on days, weeks on weeks, and months on months, etc.
Every day counts, each week matters, and every month adds up until one day the growth is evident and your training partners and instructors can’t help but notice how much you’ve grown and say, “damn Johnny you’ve come a long way!”
If you’re still reading this and you feel discouraged just know that one day you’ll look back and smile in awe at how far you’ve come as long as you keep going and NEVER give up.
Some of us has natural gifts and that’s great. But some of us don’t. Either way we ALL have the ability to remain CONSISTENT.
