Cole Abate Promoted To BJJ Brown Belt – After Winning European Championships

Cole Abate just had a spectacular performance at the IBJJF European Championship 2023 – he had 6 matches and submitted 5 of his opponents, ultimately winning the gold medal in the purple belt lightweight division.

However, this is going to be the last time that Abate has competed as a purple belt… As he has been promoted to the rank of a brown belt right there, at the podium!
He was promoted by his coach, Gui Mendes:

Abate was satisfied with his performance and is well aware that the black belt itself is well within reach:

With the help of professor Gui, we have been working on the minor adjustments needed to be made before I reach the black belt and am prepared to test myself against the best gi competitors in the world.

This is one more stepping stone that is leading me closer to the main goals I have set in the sport.

More than anything, however, Cole Abate is grateful for Gui Mendes being his coach:

His help continues to shape me into a better competitor, student, coach, and leader everyday.

Since I arrived at AOJ at age 14, he’s made my career path very clear; outlining the steps it will take to get to where we want to be, pointing out the silly mistakes to avoid along the way, and telling me the necessary actions it’ll take to become the best at what I do.

Use lessons on controlling and managing distance from guard to choose the most effective strategies and positions to attack with, including De La Riva, Reverse De La Riva, X Guard, and more

  • Gui Mendes is one of BJJ’s most respected black belts, with 4 world championships at black belt and tons of elite students at his academy Art Of Jiu-Jitsu.
  • Get real, useable lessons from Gui breaking down his own rolling, so he can narrate how he is implementing these movements and ideas.
