Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” Maciel has joined the dozens of elite level grappling competitors who’ve wanted to help out the average BJJ hobbyist by showing some essential BJJ Solo Drills. Perhaps the most famous example has been John Danaher giving away hours of content focused on solo drills, totally free of charge thanks to BJJ Fanatics. If long-winded explanations and in-depth descriptions of positioning, leverage and body mechanics aren’t quite your thing, then maybe the above five minute video is more your speed.
Cobrinha himself should really need no introduction, he’s one of the most successful BJJ competitors in the history of the sport and his son, Kennedy Maciel, is already getting started on carrying that legacy forward. Cobrinha is the proud owner of five IBJJF world titles in the Gi, four IBJJF world titles in No Gi and three consecutive ADCC gold medals in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Sadly, we haven’t seen Cobrinha in competition since that final ADCC run in 2017.
Cobrinha made headlines last year though, when he voluntarily pulled out of ADCC 2019 because both he and his son were due to compete at the event and he did not want to face him. He decided that, at 36 years old, the time was right to pass the torch onto his son and attend the event purely as a supporter and coach. Kennedy proved that this was the right decision when he nearly took over his father’s place as reigning ADCC -66kg World Champion, his only loss was a Decision to Augusto Mendes in the final, taking home silver in the end.
