The UFC’s first-ever New York event has another match confirmed. Former middleweight champ Chris Weidman will fight Cuba’s Yoel Romero on November 12 at the Madison Square Garden. MMA Junkie broke the news, and Romero confirmed it on social media.
Weidman, who’s the second-highest rated fighter in the category, comes off a loss to Luke Rockhold, his first at middleweight. Prior, he had two wins vs. Anderson Silva, and wins over Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort.
Fourth-ranked Romero last won a controversial win over Ronaldo Jacaré by split decision. He was caught doping soon after and suspended for six months.
The winner will join the melee for the belt, which also includes third-ranked Jacaré and No. 1 fighter Rockhold. These two will face off Nov. 26 in Australia.
Champion Michael Bispiing will defend his title for the first time Oct. 8 in Manchester, England, versus Dan Henderson.
