Braulio Estima: “I Never Felt Like I Was Wasting My Time With Jiu-Jitsu”

To become the best at what you do, you have to love it. And not just the end destination, but you also have to love the process… For, if you feel as if you’re wasting time, you won’t keep going for a long time.
Braulio Estima, one of the top Jiu-Jitsu competitors of the 2000s, never felt like he was wasting his time with BJJ:

Patience is very important – it’s the biggest virtue in life. [And] why is it the biggest virtue in life? Because we always tend to want to get to the end – the destination. We have to be rich, to buy the big house now.
[Instead,] focus on the process. The reason that I did choose Jiu-Jitsu was purely because I really enjoyed and loved doing what I was doing.

And I felt that I wasn’t wasting my time. Whereas [when I started] doing production engineering… Okay, it will pay well, but I’m not going to be happy doing it. And Jiu-Jitsu was something that I really found pleasure in.

Estima’s passion for Jiu-Jitsu was at the same level when he was and wasn’t paid for doing it. Braulio simply enjoyed training:

I did it even without getting paid; but just to be there, exercising… With the challenge of problem-solving, trying to develop, trying to trick my friends.
“How can I get him in a different way? And how can I train to compete? I’m going to do this work.”

There’s so many good things to it, like eating well, a good environment, you know?
